How to Identify Vintage Model Trains | Lionel, American Flyer & More
Inherited a model train collection? Learn how to identify the brand, scale, age, and condition of your trains before deciding what they're worth or the best way to sell them.
Three Steps to Identify
Before evaluating a collection, use these basic checkpoints to understand what kind of vintage model railroad equipment you have.
Determine the Scale
Locate the Maker
Assess the Condition
Measure the distance between the metal rails. O-gauge is wide and heavy, HO-scale is the most common home size, and N-scale is highly compact.
Look for manufacturer stamps on the underside of the locomotives. Classic American collections often feature Lionel, American Flyer, or Bachmann markings.
Check if you have the original cardboard boxes. Original packaging, intact paint, and clean metal wheels significantly preserve the value of vintage trains.
